Our Story: A Family Business

Humble beginnings: 1978–1987

Humble beginnings: 1978–1987

In 1978, brothers Madan and Mohan Korotane founded B.M.S. Cookware Ltd in Birmingham. The name B.M.S. - Brothers Metal Spinners, captured exactly who they were: hands on craftsmen dedicated to producing aluminium cookware.

From a small workshop in Sparkbrook (Sydenham Road), they began metal-spinning pans with a simple but powerful goal to create durable, practical, and reliable cookware that chefs could depend on every day.

By 1981, they acquired the Chef Set brand, expanding the business into a wider range of cookware and catering products, supplying wholesalers, catering companies, government departments and much more.

During the same year, the company moved to larger premises in Smethwick (Booth Street). The acquisition marked a turning point, blending family values with professional growth.

When a fire destroyed business premises in Smethwick, the family turned adversity into opportunity, establishing a larger facility in Witton (Brookvale Road), Birmingham, that housed production, warehousing, distribution, and a showroom under one roof. This allowed the company to scale stainless steel cookware production and maintain the quality and reliability for a growing market that customers had come to expect.

Innovation & Retail Expansion: 1988–1994

Innovation & Retail Expansion: 1988–1994

In 1988, Chef Set entered the consumer retail market and became a licensee holder for non-stick interior coatings and coloured exterior finishes originally developed by DuPont, now known as The Chemours Company. Today the relationship is still ongoing.

By 1990, the business formally registered as a private limited company, setting the stage for broader commercial activity in manufacturing.

In 1994, Chef Set Ltd became the first and only UK licensee of Whitford’s Excalibur coating process, bringing state-of-the-art non-stick performance to aluminium and stainless steel cookware; a milestone that reinforced the company’s reputation for innovation and quality.

As the company continued to grow, Chaman Korotane, the eldest brother also joined the team, along with additional family members.

By 1996, a second manufacturing facility was established. This opened the production of stainless steel and aluminium cookware both for the UK and export markets. The plant in Pune, India, created the opportunity for Chef Set Ltd to offer own-label and branded products more flexibly.

In the 2000s, Chef Set Ltd continued to grow through strategic partnerships and improved production. A partnership in Guangzhou, China, helped streamline direct shipments and broaden product divisions, including retail, catering, and mail order ranges.

Domestic production was strengthened with new facilities and equipment, including semi-automation and impact bonded technologies, enabling quality improvements and cost control.
